Gatlinburg Aerial Tram

The Gatlinburg Aerial tram has been in continuous service since August 5th 1973. before 1972, skiers had to drive up and down Mt. Harrison which was sometimes covered in snow in order to reach the the Ober Gatlinburg resort, which was first opened in 1962. The huge construction project of the aerial tramway started in September of 1972 and the tramway began operation on August 5, 1973. On August 5, 2010 the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway will celebrate its 37th anniversary.

Numerous safety enhancements have be made to the tramway since it’s inception. including brand new tram cars with 20% more glass area in 2007. The Gatlinburg tramway has carried more than 18 million passengers since opening in 1973, the tram leaves the downtown Gatlinburg station approximately every 20 minutes and caries 120 passenger a total distance of 2.1 miles to the Ober Gatlinburg amusement park. Mid to late October offers stunning views as the trees take on an incredible palette of bright colors before they fall to the ground for the rest of the winter season.
